Sunday June 3 – Albuquerque NM

We spent most of the day at a fiesta in Old Town Albuquerque.  By 3:30 it was so hot we decided that 5 hours worth of fiestaing was enough.  Found out later it was 93 degrees.  Record heat here and that, coupled with wind in the western part of the state, are contributing to the terrible wildfire there. The  Old Town Plaza was full of food vendors and a band (hope they kept their day jobs) and lots of people enjoying it all.  We were surprised to find most of the local food vendors selling hamburgers and hotdogs but one of the shop vendors told us that most of the people attending the fiesta are Hispanic and since they eat mostly Mexican food at home, they want to eat ethnic food when they go out.  We ate a great lunch at a great Mexican restaurant recommended by a local man we found weaving a mohair shawl.  The wool was a beautiful blend of blue and lavender but the $375 price tag he said it would sell for in his shop made me glad I don’t have any need for a shawl.  We found 2 geocaches, looked around in lots of shops, found great hats and some trinkets and peeked inside San Felipe de Neri Church which was built in 1793.

While driving around this morning we saw a bar named Imbibe.  We have also seen a hair salon named Curl Up and Dye and a saloon named Empty Pockets.

Al Unser Sr. and Al Unser Jr. were born in Albequerque and there is an Unser Blvd. and an Unser Museum here.  Seems they both had problems with the law.  On September 29, 2011 Al Unser Jr. was arrested in Albuquerque, New Mexico on charges of reckless driving and aggravated driving while intoxicated. Charges stemmed from an incident where Unser reportedly drag raced is his Chevrolet Suburban  SUV at speeds of over 100 mph. This was one of several DUI arrests and he was placed on indefinite suspension from his role with IndyCar.    His dad, Al Unser Sr. was arrested in August 2006 in New Mexico and charged with obstructing police officers responding to a carjacking and shooting in the Albuquerque neighborhood where he lives. According to police, the 67-year-old four-time Indianapolis 500 winner tried to bypass a roadblock to get to a family property in the vicinity of the police action. After being ordered to stop, Unser exited his Ford Excursion and continued arguing with cops, eventually getting cuffed and taken to a Bernalillo County sheriff’s substation.

A couple of days ago we went through  the town of Gallop New Mexico. We have always heard about Gallop Polls. There  is a Gallop Poll for the favorite T V show, Political candidate, Car Model, etc. We don’t know about you but we have never been asked to participate nor seen this mythical poll. Well as we were going through Gallop we actually found out that do really exist and took a picture of one.  See the Pictures for the actual poll.
